Glorious Day

Hey Buuuuudies!

I have had the best day. I got all my errands done, organized my entire office, filed some pictures away and organized ALL of my bills/important docs/receipts, etc. I keep an expanded folder for each year that have slots for categories like:

  • 401k
  • Insurance
  • Receipts
  • Bills
  • Mortgage
  • Important Docs

Up until now my 2008 docs were combined with 2009 docs, and that just wouldn’t do. Today, I finally had the time to separate everything out and gave 2009 its own, green folder. Ahhh, everything is right in the world 🙂 How do you stay organized?

This bar has raw cacao nibs in it, which I was totally craving today. The crunch of the nibs remind me of the crunch of hazelnuts…that’s the only way I can describe them! Well, I can describe them as tasty, too 🙂

Fun fact about me: I absolutely hate washing my face. I seriously don’t know how to do it without getting water all over the bathroom and it’s just a mess and not fun. Therefore, if I don’t shower after working out in the afternoon, more often than not I don’t wash my face at night. I know. Trust me, I know.

Anyways, I’m SO excited to use these!! I almost tried one out when I got home, then decided that having to re-apply my makeup would not be so fun. Tonight though for sure!

Speaking of, I think Ben and I are going to do a dinner + movie date night tonight. Movie = Inglorious Bastards. I have not been this excited to see a movie in AGES. I love Brad Pitt when he’s playing slightly “off” characters and BJ Novak is hysterical. Plus Quentin Tarantino (the director) is one of my absolute faves – Kill Bill I & II are my favorite movies! Should be a good night!!

Saturday:   Iowa State Fair Day!
Sunday:   I had hands down, one of the best desserts ever…
Monday:   101 Greatest Running Tips made its debut and I made a light, Vegetable Frittata.
Tuesday:   It was Mediterranean night at la casa de IGE!
Wednesday:   I had dessert for breakfast and a Tuna Salad Sandwich that squashes the stereotypes.
Thursday:   Three Question Thursday and Chocolate Banana Bread with Almond Butter continues to cause trouble.
Friday:   Oats are back!

 

So the people at PURE Bar are spreading the word about their faaaaab products on a Summer of PURE Love Tour! Among other things, they are driving a sweet, tie-dyed van around Cali, handing out free PURE Bars and displaying some wicked dance moves. Hola Amigos – happy Tuesday!

For an on-the-go breakfast today, I’m going to be noshing on a WildBlueberry PURE Bar, a Sliced Peach and Banana.

I’m going to be devastated when peaches aren’t in season anymore! Do you ever just stop and smell a peach? Sometimes I think the smell is more exciting than the taste…

Then I come to my senses, eat it, and realize that NOTHING is more exciting than the taste of a peach! 😀

For lunch today I packed some Fresh Vegetable & Thyme Frittata slices, over a big bed of baby spinach, with some of that monster squash and cherry tomatoes.

That’s the awesome thing about a frittata – it’s just as good cold, as it is hot!

I was thinking about making zucchini/squash bread with all the leftover squash I have. I think that’d work, don’t you?

Today’s Greatest Running Tips

So today’s selections from the 101 Greatest Running Tips, also come from the “Starting Out” section. They’re good ones!

Tip #9. Don’t crush the egg: “Don’t clench your fists in a white-knuckle grip. Instead, run with a cupped hand, thumbs resting on the fingers, as if you were protecting an egg in each palm.” –Runner’s World editors

I am actually in a really good habit of keeping my fingers and hands pretty loose. Like tensing up your body, clenching your fists wastes so much energy!

Tip #10. Make time for a quickie “If 15 minutes is all the time I have, I still run. Fifteen minutes of running is better than not running at all.” –Dr. Duncan Macdonald, former U.S. record holder at 5000 (set when he was in medical school)

– I can aaaaabsolutely improve on this. I am, in general, an “all or nothing” kind of person. Really though, any and all forms of exercise, in any and all lengths of time is better than nothing at all. Now I just need to convince myself that getting sweaty and needing to take a shower for a 15 minute run is worth it! Which, it is.

Tip #14. Stay “liquid” “Hydrate. Hydrate. Hydrate! In cold weather and warm. We use water to sweat, lubricate joints, tendons, and ligaments, and to carry blood efficiently to major organs. I work all day at hydrating.” –Dr. Alex Ratelle, former masters running great

I really like that quote – “I work all day at hydrating.” because it’s a really important job! If I’m not hydrated not only am I thirsty, but I’m tired, listless, cranky and working out is darn near impossible. Try getting your hydrate on with fun foods like watermelon, peaches, cucumbers & zucchini!

Well, I’m hitching a ride to work today with the husband, hence the on-the-go breakfast. The battery light came on in my car over the weekend, so I dropped it off at the service center yesterday morning. I haven’t heard back from them, so they either stole it or the problem is worse than I originally thought…RATS! Think good thoughts!!

Good morning – rise and shine – happy Sunday to you!

I woke up early this morning and knew exactly what I had to do. After a week of baking and eating cookies, not exercising as much as I would have liked to, indulging in fair food and devouring a delicious, juicy New York strip steak the size of my head at a friend’s house last night – I woke up feeling…gross.

At that point, it was the easiest decision in the world to get up, throw on my workout clothes and exercise. It must have rained last night, because as soon as I opened the front door, the cool breeze washed over me and water droplets from the trees sprinkled down. Conditions were perfect. I set out on a two mile walk and ran the two miles back. It was the best sweat sesh I have had in I don’t even know how long. It was so quiet out, the temperatures were so fair and the run back seemed almost effortless. Amazing 🙂

After a long, cold shower I had a lovely breakfast of a CranberryOrange PURE Bar and Watermelon.

I love how exercising is the perfect junk food craving crusher. Whenever I return from a good session, the thought of anything heavy or greasy just completely nauseates me. Instead, I naturally crave fresh, whole, healthy foods. Another benefit of getting your sweat on, I guess!

I have a busy day ahead of me which includes:

  • Grocery shopping
  • Folding laundry
  • A trip to the crafts store
  • Working on blog stuff
  • Dinner with my parents

I’m so glad I got some exercise in this morning as it really helps jumpstart and set the tone for the upcoming week. Here’s to the start of a good one!

Guess who’s got the cleanest kitchen on the block? ME!

Last night I went to town on my kitchen and scrubbed the floors, countertops, table and fridge. Just look at how she sparkles & shines!

Supplies are low because we’re nearing the end of the week – but we’ve got our fruit & vegetable drawers plus bottom shelf, containing bagels, fresh-from-the-field Iowa Sweet Corn (eek, need to use that tonight!) and some watermelon.

Middle shelf containing more yogurt than I could ever eat in a year, almond butter (word!) my massive bag of spinach from Costco and our meat & cheese drawer.

Finally our top shelf with all the fridge randos including: milk, a rouge apple & lime (hey, how’d you guys get out of your drawer?!) assorted beverages, tofu and egg beaters.

I forgot to take a picture of the door, but you know how that goes – condiments, butter, what have you. Now I don’t love to clean, but I do LOVE the feeling of a clean house. It seriously makes EVERYTHING better!!

So – it was already 72 degrees outside when my Mom and I went on our walk this morning! When I got home, I needed something to coooooool off. So I had Mixed Fruit Salad, Lemon Chiffon Yogurt & a CranberryOrange PURE Bar.

I depleted most of my my veggie stash with lunch today and made another Kitchen Sink Salad.

We’ve got:

  • Spinach
  • Carrot chips
  • Leftover tomatoes & basil
  • Radishes (which, holy cow, get SO spicy as they sit! I cut these up on Monday I think, and they are ZIP-PAY today!)
  • Cherry tomatoes
  • Deli turkey

It’s gonna be a scorcher today – I’m so glad I got all my baking done last night so I can keep the oven OFF tonight! Have a supah Thursday!

2. I get ready in silence 😦 When Ben used to go to work before me, I’d listen to the morning news channel, but he gets up after me now so I have to entertain myself!

3. Long term goal: Greece. Short term goal: NYC! I have had the biggest craving to go there lately…ugh I just love it!

Good morning everyone!

Well I stayed true to my word yesterday and had probably the laziest Saturday I’ve had in recent memory. I actually started to feel like a giant bum so I made myself get out of the house to go grocery shopping and also made a stop at Best Buy (Season 1 & 2 of Weeds on sale!). The highlight of my day though, is when my parents came over to bring me a Puff Pillow from the Farmer’s Market! YESSSS!!

I seriously vegged the rest of the day. To be fair, the heat index was 104, so nobody was doing a whole lot of anything around here. Ben and I watched Finding Nemo on tv (best movie ever!!) and went to bed at 10. Super!

Now, today is vastly different than yesterday. I got up early, swept the front porch, weeded a part of my garden, moved and fed my tomato plants and had breakfast. All before 9!

Here’s said breakfast: Blueberry Cheesecake Fat-Free Yogurt, Cantaloupe & a WildBlueberry PURE Bar.

So the plan for the rest of the day is to drive down to Iowa City (about 2 hours away) to surprise Ben’s Mom for her birthday! She’s up there moving Ben’s little brother back to college, so we’re going to surprise her there since we weren’t able to celebrate her birthday when it actually happened on Friday. Kind of a long and complicated story, but the jist of it is – we’re road tripping today!

I love going to Iowa City – it’s the home of the University of Iowa and the Iowa Hawkeyes, GO HAWKS! I love being in college towns and especially walking through college campuses. It brings back so many wonderful memories of my days spent in college. Ahhh, things were so simple back then, weren’t they?? Actually, let’s be real, exams and papers were a huge pain in the A and I’m really glad I don’t have to do them anymore. BUT, there’s no denying that college as a whole, was the best time of my life!

One word – FRIDAY!

It’s a rainy Friday here – in fact, the rain even chased me and my Mom down the street at the tail end of our walk! We got home just as the clouds opened up.

Friday also marks the return of the Green Monster. Gosh, I haven’t had one of these babies in forever! I made the overnight version, and per usual, it was so sweet, thick and creeeeammy.

Hey – guess who jumped on the Green Monster train?? THEO!! Is this not the most adorable little 3 year old you have EVER seen? His Mom, Stacey, sent me this picture of him enjoying a green monster smoothie. While Theo is a very healthy eater, he usually turns up his nose at spinach. That is, until his Mom started making this beautiful, bright green smoothie that peaked his interest. Now he can’t get enough!!

So Mom’s out there – if your child isn’t getting enough greens in their life – give this smoothie a whirl. I know another Mom who has her little boy convinced these are milkshakes and even puts sprinkles on top! Hey – whatever you gotta do!!

Today I packed a lunch-o’-randomness. Cantaloupe, Rotisserie Chicken Rice & a Peach.

So friends – what are you up to this weekend? Once again I have ZERO plans…cool! I’m not sure how long this rain is supposed to last but if it’s still around this evening I’m thinking I’d like to go to a movie. Have you seen anything good lately? I heard that Ryan Reynolds/Sandra Bullock flick was decent.
